CBT Courses

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is usually a one day course that can be completed upon your own bike or upon our training schools hire bike. Our CBT courses are held at Angmering School.

Southern Riders CBT courses are held over the weekends and on some weekdays (during the school holidays) and incorporate both off-road and on-road training. The course is divided into 5 elements, starting with an introductory talk, going on to practical off-road training and riding, a talk on practical on-road riding, then the on-road element itself. Instructors use bike to bike radio links to communicate with students while out on-road. You will need to provide your own helmet and gloves (for safety and hygiene reasons we do not recommend you use second hand helmets). You will also need to bring your valid driving licence with you. (Both parts of your driving licence, if you have the new plastic ID card licence with paper counterpart )

All CBT courses need to be booked in advance. Once you have successfully completed CBT and have your Certificate (DL196), you can carry on to take additional training to pass your test if you wish.

If required, Southern Riders have mopeds or motorcycles for hire during training courses and for further practice in between training sessions.

For those of you who may have completed a CBT before please note CBT pass certificates issued before February 2001 were valid for a period of three years from the date of issue, those issued after February 2001 are now only valid for 2 years. The CBT will have to be re-taken if both the theory and practical test are not passed within the life of the CBT certificate.

The Theory Test

After CBT any one wishing to take their first bike test with the DSA must pass the motorcycle theory test before applying for the full test. The theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. The practical test must be passed within this period otherwise the Theory Test will have to be taken again. Books, CD's and help with the study towards the theory test are available with Southern Riders.

"Further Training" for the Full Test

Southern Riders Picture

If you want to take the Full Test on a moped, 125cc motorcycle, or a larger machine through the 'Direct Access Scheme', and have successfully completed the CBT, "Further Training" through our standard Test Course will be needed to gain the necessary skills, confidence and knowledge required to pass your test. When you are ready, Southern Riders can arrange the DSA test for you.

The Standard Test Course

This is a highly recommended course, run over 2 days. It has been designed and developed over many years of experience to help you pass your test first time. It builds on what you learnt during your CBT course, focussing more on practical riding skills, rather than on theory.

Courses are available weekdays, weekends or evenings, allowing for the time of year.

All course prices remain the same whenever you chose to complete your training with Southern riders and you will not be expected to pay any extra for weekends.

After completing your standard test course you can then take your practical test on a maximum of a 125cc bike. You will then be restricted to a bike not exceeding 33 brake horse power (25kw) for a period of two years, after which the restriction is lifted and you can then ride any size machine without having to complete any further tests.

To avoid the 2-year wait, if you are 21 or over, you could take the 'direct access scheme' (DAS) course in addition to this course, before taking your full test.

125cc hire bikes are available for the training and the test, if required.

All courses can be scheduled around your time table and requirements.

125cc hire bikes are also available for solo practice before either full practical test.

The 'Direct Access Scheme' (DAS) Course

At Southern Riders we feel it is important to be able to ride and learn at your own pace therefore all our direct access training is on a one to one basis only at no extra cost.

This course is available to anyone 21 years and over who wishes to take their practical test on a big bike (greater than 33bhp) without having the 2 years restriction. The course will take what you learnt on your standard test course and help you apply it to a larger machine. This riding experience is essential if you want to have a good chance of passing the practical test on a bigger bike. The course is conducted on a 1 to 1 basis only, so you do not share your time with someone else. That gives us the ability to work on any areas of weakness or worry that you may have without feeling pressured by another trainee. Training is available during the week and at the weekends. Included in course prices is the use of 'bike to bike' radios and an escort to (but hopefully not back from) the test centre on the day of test. During training you are accompanied at all times by a qualified DAS instructor. Modern 500cc hire bikes are available on loan from Southern Riders for training and the test.

Refresher Courses

Beyond DAS

Many of our trainees pass their Direct Access without having purchased a bike. Some have a new bike just waiting to be ridden. Whichever the case trainees who have passed with us often find that a riding session with an instructor, after passing the test, is very useful. It allows you to get used to your new machine accompanied by an experienced rider.
